CITY OF MOSES LAKE: Covid-19 Concerns Prevent Surf ‘n Slide Water Park From Opening This Summer

Open1

City of Moses Lake issued the following announcement on July 15.

The City of Moses Lake’s Surf ‘n Slide Water Park will not open this summer because of health concerns related to the COVID-19 outbreak.

Water park staff originally planned to have the facility opened when Grant County was approved to enter Phase 3 of the state’s reopening plan. As of today, July 15, Grant County remains in Phase 2 and it is not known when Phase 3 would occur. The state requires Grant County to be in Phase 3 for water parks to operate for public use.

City staff conducted a financial analysis of opening late in the season. It was not considered financially possible to do, explained City Manager Allison Williams during this week’s City Council meeting.

“We are disappointed along with the community, but are following the mandates of the health district and the state,” Parks and Recreation Department Director Spencer Grigg said. The Parks and Recreation Department started the refund process for prepaid season pass holders and swimming lesson customers. A refund form for season pass holders can be found on the water park page of the city’s website, www.cityofml.com.

“We did everything that was possible and came up with solutions to everything the state threw at us,” Recreation Supervisor Tom Los said.  Grant County not entering Phase 3 was outside the city’s control, he commented.

Parks and Recreation Department staff is now offering video swim lessons on its Facebook page. The videos will also be posted to the city’s website in the near future.
