CITY OF MOSES LAKE: Museum Branches out into Video Connect with the Public

Announcement

City of Moses Lake issued the following announcement on Aug. 5.

The City of Moses Lake Museum & Art Center started a YouTube channel to highlight exhibits closed to the public.

Grant County is currently in Phase 2 of the state’s reopening plan and must be in Phase 3 for the Museum to open.

There is a video posted on the Museum’s new YouTube channel of Artistic Director Erika Kovalenko painting a mammoth mural. Another video features Curator Ann Schempp and Museum Manager Dollie Boyd in an episode of Curator’s Corner. The pair shares historical examples of ephemera, which are items like matchbooks and postcards that have a short time use.

Some matchbooks at the Museum profiled local businesses, including OK Tires and Smitty’s Pancake House, explained Schempp.

“Without these, some of this would have been lost to history,” she commented.

A item such as a napkin from a 50th wedding anniversary with the family name intact “means a lot because it helps us track history,” Schempp said.

Boyd and Schempp wear face coverings in the video because of the state health rule. Even so, their enthusiasm and love of their work comes through in their voices, preparation, and overall presentation.

“When you come back to the Museum, you will have a deep, deep appreciation for what we have going on here,” Boyd said.

This week, Museum staff plans to film the Johnny Cash Gallery Show, then conduct a virtual tour for online posting in the near future.

Other Museum offerings include a curbside pickup version of the monthly Free Family Saturday craft activity, hosting a second rug class, and looking at what other four-person classes can be offered by current staff.
