Franklin County Sheriff News

Car gc7dfd6b56 1280

(22-01368) On or about 7:00 a.m. on April 1st, a resident of Othello observed his vehicle being stolen from his drive-way.   The owner decided to follow the theft and report the incident to Adams County 911.   Further reporting that he was following the vehicle in another car.     Eventually, Adams County Deputies were able to catch up to the stolen vehicle but not before the vehicle and follow vehicle entered Franklin County.

At approximately Hendricks and Scootney Rd, the stolen vehicle driver, abruptly stopped and exited the vehicle.  Produced a handgun and began firing upon the owner of the stolen vehicle.  The owner was following the suspect while waiting for the police to catch-up.    Thankfully the Othello resident and stolen car owner was not hit or injured by the reckless gunfire.  The suspect jumped back into the stolen vehicle and speed off entering Highway 17, and eventually highway 395 southbound.

Franklin County and Adams County Deputies took up the pursuit of the car theft and now felony assault suspect shortly after the shooting incident.    It was reported that the suspect vehicle was exceeding speeds of 100 mph while traveling southbound on 395.   When all of a sudden he slowed to a stop on the side of the freeway at Eltopia-West and 395.   Where he stuck both hands out the car window and gave himself up to Deputies without incident.     Deputies believe he ran out of gas….

The black vehicle in the picture is the vehicle stolen early this morning out of the City of Othello.    Arrested out of the vehicle at the scene was Tony Orlando Cantu, 45 yoa, of Othello.  Cantu was transported and booked into the Franklin County Corrections Center for various felony charges which include possession of stolen property, eluding, and felony assault.

According to the Adams County Sheriff Dale Wagner who was on the scene with the Franklin County Sheriff this morning on 395.    This vehicle is one of three vehicles stolen out of Othello in the last 24 hours.

The victim’s white vehicle has been towed and secured for evidentiary purposes by the Adams and Franklin County detectives for processing.

The victim vehicle, following his stolen ILX car into Franklin County.

This vehicle was also towed from the scene in order to recover projectiles from the body of the vehicle.  Again all the damage and loss of property is at the cost to the victim, but at least he wasn’t injured by gun fire.

Great display of teamwork!!!
