Washington Governor Jay Inslee has confirmed that Bethany Martinez has been appointed to the Big Bend Community College Board of Trustees. Martinez replaces former Trustee Thomas Stredwick who served on the board for five years.
“I am excited to be a part of the BBCC board, to learn more about the work being done and to see how I can contribute to it moving forward,” Martinez said. “The more I talk with recently graduated students in our community, the more I am becoming aware of their challenges when continuing their education beyond high school.”
Martinez has worked for the Wahluke School District (WSD) for more than 18 years in various capacities that include Bilingual Teacher, Intervention Specialist, Instructional Facilitator, and Bilingual Teacher on Special Assignment (TOSA) where she oversaw English Language Development to English Learners in the school district.
She has taught every grade (kindergarten through 12th) and is an advocate for multilingual learners and their families. Martinez currently serves as the school district’s Director of Multilingual & Multicultural Services and is excited to join Big Bend’s Board of Trustees.
“I think that community colleges are uniquely situated to meet that need,” Martinez added. “When I first read Big Bend’s Mission and Vision, it resonated with me and I can’t wait to meet the team and see how I can contribute.”
Bethany also serves on OSPI’s Dual Language Steering Committee and is active in many other committees across the state. Outside of education, she is busy raising her three children, helping coach youth sports, and is secretary of the sports non-profit Wahluke United.
Martinez will participate in her first meeting Dec. 6th.
