Collision snarls traffic morning on SR-17

Ann

MLPD assisted the Washington State Patrol with a collision on SR17 that lead to the highway being closed for over an hour.

Just before 9 am this morning, officers responded to a head-on collision on SR-17 at the railroad tracks, just south of Stratford Road. Evidence at the scene showed that a southbound vehicle had crossed into the northbound lanes and went head-on with a northbound vehicle. Another northbound vehicle was unable to avoid the collision and struck one of the vehicles as well.

One driver had to be extricated by firefighters. Two were transported by ambulance to the hospital. Despite the picture with the jaws of life, Ofc. Hohman did not help with the extrication. He is just really good at lifting heavy things, so he helped out the fire fighters.

Northbound SR17 was closed for over an hour, and southbound SR17 was reduced to one lane. However, all of the flashing blue and red lights did little to encourage a number of southbound drivers to slow as they drove through the collision scene.

In fact, one young lady came through the single lane in excess of 50 miles an hour, within feet of officers and fire fighters on scene, then began to lose control and slide on the slippery roadway. If three destroyed vehicles, 7 patrol cars with lights on, a bunch of firetrucks and snow on the road doesn’t get your attention, this probably won’t either.

Please slow down, and don’t be that guy (or gal). Believe it or not, we will probably continue to have snowy roads in town for a few more months.

Further details will be released by WSP.
