Warden high school student Santiago Herrera Bautista was recently chosen to represent the Big Bend Community College TRiO Upward Bound program at the 34th annual National Student Leadership Conference (NSLC) in Washington, D.C this summer.

Bautista is currently a junior at Warden High School and a Big Bend Running Start student.

NSLC provides select TRIO pre-college students with an opportunity to experience life on a college campus, develop essential leadership skills, and explore future careers through site visits and meetings with leaders in their chosen field.

Participants also get to experience a day on Capitol Hill and visit Washington D.C. landmarks and museums.

TRiO Upward Bound director Anita De Leon said there were several factors their team considered when choosing a student to nominate.

“We selected Santiago based on his academic performance, leadership (he tutors middle school students), and active participation in our program,” she said. “He attended the six-week residential summer academy in 2022 and attends the program’s monthly Saturday PREP events. He’s a hard-working, mature, and dedicated student.”

De Leon said she hopes he gets a lot out of this experience.

“We want Santiago to be able to step out of his comfort zone by traveling on an airplane for the first time and meeting new people from around the nation,” she said. “We hope he gains knowledge about the U.S. federal government and how TRIO programs fit into their priorities. More than anything, we hope Santiago will gain a broader perspective of the world he lives in with firsthand experiences.”
