Grant County health officials are sounding the alarm when it comes to in-person instruction for the state's school districts while citing a spike in COVID-19 cases in the North Central area of the state as well as the recent school outbreaks in other states showing how fast young people can spread the virus.

The Grant County Health District suggested in a letter to the state's school districts that they implement remote learning for the beginning of the school year, iFiber One reported.

"We all bear the responsibility for bringing the rates of COVID-19 down and should resolve to do so for the sake of our children," the Grant County Health District stated in its letter, iFiber One reported. "We believe COVID-19 infection rates at schools cannot be disentangled from the rate observed in communities served by the schools. What we also must consider and know fairly well is the COVID’s ability to spread effectively in group settings which then gives rise to increased hospitalization, promoting deadly impact on vulnerable people."

The health district went on to state that schools should not open their buildings until coronavirus cases have reached "desired targets," iFiber One reported.
