Officials in Moses Lake City continue to move ahead with their plans for a homeless camp in the hopes it will address concerns from residents, and especially local businesses owners, over the increased number of homeless living in the area near Neppel Park.
According to an Oct. 5 iFiberOne News article, city officials plan to lease the former lumber yard property along East Broadway Avenue to establish a homeless camp with portable housing and security which the homeless could access from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. Issues have arisen over the homeless that are actually living on private property owned by the Columbian Basin Railroad, according to iFiberONe News.
“The City has a trespass agreement with the railroad, but the homeless camp is the ultimate solution," City of Moses Lake spokeswoman Lynee Lynch said in the IFiberOne article. "Our trespass agreements will be more effective when the city has the homeless camp in place that will offer a place for the homeless to go instead of public and private property."
The camp is expected to set up and ready to use by the first of November, according to iFiberOne.
